The Weight of Memory

Memories are the weight that presses upon my chest
a heavy burden that I can’t shake
the whispers of the past echoing through my mind
a constant reminder of what could have been

The smell of freshly cut grass transports me back
to summer days spent playing in the backyard
laughter and shouts of excitement filling the air
as we chased each other around, our feet bare and untethered

But the weight of memory is not just sweet
it’s also a reminder of what was lost
of loved ones who have passed on
of moments that can never be relived

The sound of the ocean waves crashing against the shore
brings me back to a family vacation
a trip to the beach with my grandparents
a time when life was simpler, and worries were few

We built sandcastles, collected seashells, and watched the sunset
our laughter and joy echoing across the water
but even in those moments, there was a sense of impermanence
a knowledge that it would all come to an end

The weight of memory is a bittersweet thing
a reminder of what has been, but also a reminder of what could be
a reminder to cherish every moment, no matter how small
for it is these moments that make up the fabric of our lives

And yet, even as I hold on to these memories
I am aware that they are fleeting, ephemeral things
subject to the whims of time and circumstance
and that one day, they will be gone

But for now, I hold on tight
to the memories that make up my life
to the people who have shaped me into who I am today
and to the experiences that have given me depth and meaning

For in the end, it is not the years that we live that define us
but the memories that we make along the way

And so I will hold on to these memories
and cherish them for all they are worth
for they are the threads that weave together my life story
and without them, I would be nothing.

  • It allows poets to express themselves freely, without adhering to traditional poetic structures.

  • The poem’s structure and form are often determined by the natural flow of language and the poet’s emotions.
  • Free verse poetry can be more personal and introspective than other forms of poetry, as it allows poets to explore their thoughts and feelings in a more direct way.
